Why does anyone believe anything Michael Moore says? Here's the latest prevarication to be discovered in Fahrenheit 911:
U.S. Rep. Mark Kennedy didn't get his say in the trailer for the Michael Moore's controversial new movie and he won't get it in "Fahrenheit 9/11" when the full-length feature hits theaters this summer.Last week, when the movie trailer first appeared on the Internet, it contained Moore's ambush interview of the Watertown Republican. In the preview, the liberal film maker asks Kennedy to help enlist the children of members of congress to fight in Iraq.
Kennedy's reply is not given in the trailer, which annoyed the congressman, because Kennedy said that he had talked about his nephews in the military and fighting overseas. He has two nephews who have served.
As an initial matter, notice that Moore couldn't be bothered to do any research whatsoever as to which Congressman to "interview." Had he spent two minutes googling, he would have found that Kennedy had made reference to his nephews serving back in March 2003, and thus should have picked someone else to harass. Second, notice that Moore, like Andy Rooney, can't understand that our soldiers are volunteers, not conscripts. No one has to enlist, not even the children of congresspeople. He also insults our soldiers with this question, suggesting that they don't want to fight and shouldn't be expected to go to war even though that's what they agreed to do when they enlisted. Finally, there's this:
On Friday, Moore issued a statement saying, "None of this exchange (between Moore and Kennedy) is included in the film. No statements by Rep. Kennedy are in the film. There was no editing of his remarks."
It's not clear to me whether Moore took the entire segment out of the film -- even though it's included in the trailer -- or just took out Kennedy's entire answer to the question. Kennedy's office believes it's the latter, and they have a right to be upset. What Mikey seems to be saying is that since he took all of Kennedy's comments out, there was no selective editing. Truly he has a dizzying intellect. Kennedy ruined Mikey's soundbite, and since he's too lazy to try to get another one and too dishonest to scrap the whole thing, he'll just take Kennedy's answer out to suggest to the audience that Kennedy, and by extension every other legislator, has no personal stake in the Iraq War. Shameful.
