It's National Poetry Month
April is National Poetry Month. It's not exactly a grand tradition, since this is only NPM's tenth anniversary, but I feel like poetry is something I should have an appreciation for. I mean, I do, to some extent, but it's more along the lines of the poetry of Dr. Suess or anything that begins with "There once was a man from Nantucket."
Anyways, Michele hipped me to the fact that we're in National Poetry Month, and asks her readers for their favorite poems. As I left in her comments, mine is Frost's Acqainted With the Night. Full text below the fold.
I have been one acquainted with the night.
I have walked out in rain -- and back in rain.
I have outwalked the furthest city light.
I have looked down the saddest city lane.
I have passed by the watchman on his beat
And dropped my eyes, unwilling to explain.
I have stood still and stopped the sound of feet
When far away an interrupted cry
Came over houses from another street,
But not to call me back or say good-by;
And further still at an unearthly height
One luminary clock against the sky
Proclaimed the time was neither wrong nor right.
I have been one acquainted with the night.
