Sunday Roundup

Since I've been a total slackass when it comes to the Five at Five, here's a link-filled roundup of good reading:

  • Notre Dame beat Tennessee yesterday, 17-13, despite producing only 30 yards on offense in the second and third quarters. On offense, the Irish were simply outplayed. But Notre Dame's defense was hell on wheels.

  • The NYT's David Brooks does a terrific job deconstructing the myth that President Bush won his second term thanks to anti-gay voters.  Problem is, the vast majority on the Left are not swayed by facts that don't support what they already believe (see, e.g., the Dan Rather forgeries, the phantom 380 tons of explosives, the draft, and the Swift Boat Veterans and POWs for Truth).  Simple red-stater that I am, I always find empirical evidence more persuasive than perpetuating baseless stereotypes and making gross generalizations about large groups of people.  Must be because I live in "flyover country."  The inimitable Mark Steyn has related thoughts.

  • Paula Radcliffe, who decided to enter the New York City Marathon on a whim two weeks ago, won the whole enchilada, in the tightest women's race in the race's history.  American Meb Keflezighi, the Olympic marathon silver medalist, acquitted himself well with a 2:09:53 effort, earning him second place.  The disappointments:  Deena Kastor, Olympic marathon bronze medalist, and Bob Kennedy did not finish.

  • They know how to do things out west.  A White Pine County, NV race for county commissioner ended in a tie.  Instead of resorting to lawyers, expensive recounts and Michael Moore, the two gentlemen agreed to follow Nevada law and settled the tie with a game of high-card.  A queen of clubs did the trick.

  • Irony so good you'll wish there were two of you:  Shopping for the Insufferably Sanctimonious.  The spare rib joke almost made me lose my shit.  (Link via A Small Victory.)

  • Iowahawk keeps hope alive for the loony left:

If you look at the electoral map, one thing is abundantly clear: Democrats still control several strategically important harbors. If the rightwing nuts decide to attack Sausalito, they'll have to come directly through your flanks.

Money is the lifeblood of politics, and Democrats were able to establish a solid fundraising network in 2004. This will stand you in good stead in future elections. When you go back to George Soros and Steve Bing in 2008 and ask them for another $150 million, make sure you point out all the successes you accomplished this year.

Sure, Canada is cold and bleak, with staggering unemployment rates. But they have free health insurance, and unlike the Amerikkkan Nazi fuctard hellhole, nobody in Canada is going to question your patriotism.

Kerry's lack of success in the South was largely due to the fact that Southerners are uneducated and often 'slow.' Studies have found that special needs students often learn better through repetition, so it will be important to continually remind Southerners that they are violent inbred monkey-people.

  • Attorney / blogger / friend Don Burton lists 82 films to avoid, based on the fact that they are named after rock 'n roll era songs (not necessarily rock 'n roll songs, but songs written after 1950 or so).  I agree with the vast majority of the list; Dazed and Confused, Pretty in Pink, American Pie, Sixteen Candles, Blue Velvet, Only the Lonely and Valley Girl are the exceptions that prove the rule.
