Word is that Tyrone Willingham has resigned. I can't even speak rationally about this; I love Coach Willingham, and I feel like he had the program moving in the right direction. I can't help but feel like the program and players will be worse off, unless they can bring in a guy like Urban Meyer or Bobby Petrino.
If Coach Willingham has resigned, and if his resignation was due, in whole or in part, to internal pressures, the administration and the boosters ought to be ashamed of themselves.
UPDATE: ESPN says that Coach Willingham was fired. Only hiring Woody Hayes or Bear Bryant can save ND from becoming a laughingstock. I'm speechless.
UPDATE 2: ESPN has a list of potential replacements for Ty. I'd love for ND to bring on Urban Meyer, but the timing doesn't make sense. Why fire Ty now when Meyer won't be available until January? Kirk Ferentz is intriguing, as he's a fine Midwest recruiter and runs an offense that would play to ND's current strengths. I fear that he, like Cal's Jeff Tedford, are holding out for NFL positions, however. I don't know much about the guy from
Bozo Boise State, but I suspect his gimmick offense will not work against the opponents Notre Dame schedules every year.
