I realize I'm not the first person to notice this (not by a longshot -- Spoons has been doing this faithfully and well for months), but Andrew Sullivan has become a parody of himself. This became apparent to me some time ago, but an entry from today is sticking in my craw for some reason. Andrew excoriates -- rightly -- the Republican delegate who passed out those disgraceful "purple heart band-aids" at the RNC. Then he adds this choice swipe at the end: "But it also tells you something about what motivates some of the Republican base." Despite Sullivan's hedging, this is a naked attempt to paint all conservatives with the same broad brush, and it's utter crap. As terrible as those band-aids are, they are no more offensive than the hate-filled diatribes that make up about 97% of the threads on Democratic Underground. To my mind, what you can find on DU is much, much more disturbing in terms of "what motivates some of the [Democratic] base" than the at-best distasteful band-aids. I realize it's Andrew's blog and he doesn't have to give equal time to all sides of everything, but that comment suggests that only the right has idiot fringe elements, which is so obviously and frighteningly not the case.
