On Pat Tillman and Rene Gonzalez
I haven't posted on Pat Tillman because others summed up my thoughts much more eloquently than I could have. Then, I didn't comment on Rene Gonzalez's ignorant missive about how Pat Tillman is not a hero because, frankly, I don't much care what a 24 year-old thinks about anything, because they don't know shit. When I was 24, I didn't know shit, and I'll bet you didn't either. But, as Lileks points out today, we thought we knew, and that's what's so embarrassing now.
It's this last that's made me want to comment briefly on the "apology" Gonzalez made to Pat Tillman's family. While it bothers me that it's not really an apology, it bothers me more that he thinks that Pat Tillman's family actually cares enough about what he thought of Pat to even care that he's apologizing. Based on the man that Pat Tillman showed himself to be, eschewing interviews and recognition, I think the Tillman family probably couldn't give a shit what Rene Gonzalez or anyone else thinks.
On a lighter note, this is really, really fuckin' funny. (Link via A Small Victory.)
